Case reports cover rare gastroenterology, hepatology topics

One recent case discusses dysphagia lusoria, and another describes acute liver failure secondary to herpes simplex virus hepatitis.

Two recent case reports in Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases relate to gastroenterology and hepatology.

One case report, published Oct. 7, discussed a 61-year-old man who developed dysphagia two days after percutaneous coronary intervention. Imaging revealed an aberrant right subclavian artery compressing the esophagus consistent with dysphagia lusoria, despite no procedural complications.

The second case report, also published Oct. 7, described two young immunocompetent patients with no significant comorbid conditions who died of acute liver failure associated with herpes simplex virus hepatitis. Both patients, a 19-year-old woman and a 22-year-old transgender man, had gynecologic surgery before their liver injury.
