Case reports discuss hematochezia, Sweet syndrome

One case focuses on hematochezia due to geophagia, while the other describes a patient with recalcitrant gut and cutaneous Sweet syndrome.

Two recent case reports in Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases relate to gastroenterology.

One case report, published Aug. 5, describes a 36-year-old woman with kidney failure on home hemodialysis who presented with hematochezia, myalgias, and fatigue and was found to have significant geophagia and intake of bentonite clay.

The second case report, also published Aug. 5, details the case of a 50-year-old woman with cutaneous Sweet syndrome in remission who presented with symptomatic iron deficiency anemia and was referred to the gastroenterology clinic for lethargy and dizziness. She was found to have cutaneous papules and small bowel ulcers on enteroscopy and was eventually diagnosed with gut and cutaneous Sweet syndrome that eventually responded to subcutaneous adalimumab and oral methotrexate.
