Case reports cover portal hypertensive polyps, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis
Two gastroenterology and hepatology topics were touched upon in recent cases.
Gastroenterology and hepatology topics were covered recently in Annals of Internal Medicine: Clinical Cases.
An image/video case published on Feb. 18 described a rare instance of portal hypertensive polyps in chronic heart and liver disease, presenting with acute blood loss anemia. The patient was a 58-year-old man with chronic nonischemic cardiomyopathy and nonalcoholic cirrhosis awaiting dual-organ transplantation.
The other case, also published Feb. 18, involved hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis as a complication of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis and miliary tuberculosis. A 60-year-old woman who had recently begun dialysis presented with jaundice and anasarca a month after being treated for bacterial peritonitis. An investigation revealed disseminated tuberculosis. It is the first such case to be reported in the United States, to the authors' knowledge.
