A plan for paracentesis

A new clinic successfully reduced demand for paracentesis in the ED among patients with ascites.

A Success Story published May 22 by ACP Hospitalist described how a hospitalist launched a clinic to provide paracentesis to patients who had repeatedly presented to the ED with refractory ascites. The outpatient FLuid ASPiration (FLASP) clinic at LA General reduced demand in the ED for paracentesis while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction. Clinicians working in the FLASP clinic performed ultrasound-guided paracentesis and clinic staff connected patients with hepatology specialists.
