Recent conference coverage featured gastroenterology and hepatology topics

Conference coverage in the December ACP Hospitalist addressed acute-on-chronic liver failure and inpatient constipation.

The December ACP Hospitalist featured coverage from Southern Hospital Medicine 2018 and the American College of Gastroenterology's 2018 annual meeting that focused on gastroenterology and hepatology.

A talk at the former conference covered acute-on-chronic liver failure, including why to look for infection in patients with new-onset hepatic encephalopathy and cirrhosis and how to assess fluid and intravascular status.

At the latter conference, an expert offered tips on managing inpatient constipation, which has increased by approximately 120% since 1997. Among her advice include the importance of taking a proactive approach and thinking of inpatient constipation treatment as having induction and maintenance stages.
